Straight Finish Information

How to apply plaster finishes to a wall
Plaster is a mixture of sand or fine aggregates with cement or any other bonding materials allowable. This type of finish is the most commonly applied to walls or concrete surfaces. After application to walls other finishes like paint or coatings can then be applied. The thickness normally depends on the surface, but should not be very thick. This is because it will not have adhered well to the wall. Plaster must be wetted thoroughly after being applied.
Plaster preparation is very important. This starts by checking straightness and plumbness of the walling material. Fix ten to fifteen millimeters of studs or timber blocks plumbed and aligned well. Use a straight edge and long spirit level to check the straightness. Place atleast ten marks on the wall, atleast top, bottom and middle in rows. Mix cement and sand to give a working consistency with water. Wet the wall surface well before commencement.
Plaster to walls begins by mixing mortar with water to make a paste. Use a steel float to put it on the wall. Apply until all timber blocks are covered. Apply slightly dry mortar and use the straight edge to pull off the excess mixture. Pull diagonally, vertically and horizontally to expose the markers. Use a wooden float with a slurry to rub round the surface. Use a straight edge to check for straightness and square at comers to keep ninety degrees.
After confirming the plaster is relatively dry, remove markers and fill slots with mortar. Make cement grouting and apply using a steel float. Paste the whole wall until its covered. Use forward and back strokes to have a smooth surface. Ensure that even corners are square perpendicularly and horizontally including skirting and cornice points. Allow to dry for atleast seven days continuously wetting. After its dry other finishes like paint are done.
