Marble Tile Information

Laying Marble Tile is Like Installing Ceramic Tile But Different

Marble is mined from naturally occurring deposits.  Laying marble tile is a little bit tricky because of the natural variation in the tiles.  Once you learn the tricks most handy people are able to install tile just as well as a pro, but maybe a little slower!

Laying marble tile is much like installing ceramic tile but a little different because the material is a bit different.  I grew up near an area where marble mining was a basic industry so I’ve been where marble is very common.  You see ceramics are fire cured clays that can be really hard and very consistent.  On the other hand marble is a natural mined “stone”.

Marble is cut out of naturally occurring deposits then is ground to give it that look that we all admire.  The polished look is beyond compare.  To get the marble look you want requires some care thought because of the natural variation in the mined product.

One cool part of marble is the color variation.  From black to pink and all kinds of combinations of color can be had.  The rarity of some colors is reflected in the price.  The color you want may only be available from very few places in the world.

Another feature that gives these tiles character is the veining.  Veining is the narrow streaks of color and variation in the surface of the tiles.  Of course veining is actually small cracks.  You can imagine that small cracks are a perfect place for larger cracks to begin.  That potential cracking is one of the main challenges to installation.

Laying marble tile must be done over a flat surface and the base must be very solid.  Otherwise flexing of the tile will likely cause cracks in the tile and a big mess.  Also just lack of care when handling the tile will often crack tiles too.  With a flat, solid surface as a base, you’ve a good chance for success.  But make sure you get the surface right.

Other marble tile installation challenges include getting the tiles flat.  Marble is ground to get it flat.  The manufacturing process produces heat which causes some variation in tile thickness.  You must provide for this variation when you set the tile.
